Overview

Located on Jl. Veteran Utara No.288 in Makassar, Soto Betawi offers a distinct take on the traditional Betawi soup that has become a cherished comfort food across Indonesia. This restaurant focuses on delivering the rich, aromatic flavors of Soto Betawi with a local Makassar twist, providing an experience that balances authenticity and regional adaptation.

The main attraction is the Soto Betawi itself—a hearty soup that combines tender cuts of beef, including unique offal like lung, heart, and tongue, simmered in a fragrant, creamy broth infused with spices and coconut milk. Variations such as Soto Betawi Daging Paru and Soto Betawi Komplit highlight the diversity on the menu, catering to those seeking both traditional and more comprehensive servings. Complementary dishes like Kupat Tahu and Soto Betawi Nasi Putih enhance the dining experience by adding texture and familiar accompaniments.

What sets Soto Betawi apart is how it adapts Betawi flavors to the Palate of Sulawesi Selatan without losing the essence of the original dish. As noted by locals, the soup here is slightly lighter than the Jakarta original, providing a fresh, cleaner taste while still maintaining depth. This balance makes it approachable for both curious newcomers and seasoned lovers of Indonesian cuisine.

The ambiance of the restaurant reflects its straightforward yet warm approach. It caters primarily to those who appreciate cultural dishes served with sincerity—food enthusiasts, locals, and travelers alike seeking to explore the culinary landscape beyond typical street fare. The space is practical, focusing on the food and convivial dining rather than elaborate décor, allowing the tastes to take center stage.

Patrons frequently praise the quality of the meat and offal, with tender textures that contrast beautifully against the rich broth. Long-time visitors, like Danny DJ, emphasize the consistently satisfying soup and delicately tender meats, while others marvel at the freshness and depth of the flavors offered. Although some mention that prices may lean higher compared to other street food staples like Coto Makassar, the elevated quality and unique blend of spices make it a worthwhile experience.

Overall, Soto Betawi stands as a must-visit destination for those eager to dive into a nuanced variation of Betawi cuisine set in the vibrant city of Makassar. It captures a balance between tradition and local innovation, promising a memorable meal steeped in heritage and flavor.

This Soto Betawi is totally different from the original one from Jakarta. This is the Makassar version of soto Betawi. The soup is slightly less heavy than the usual one. It's worth to try but you need mind the price as it is more expensive then other street food/restaurants (like the legend Coto Makassar) you can find around the city.

The best soto Betawi in town IMHO. Though I am not sure what real soto Betawi looks like, since there are lots of cuisine bearing the same name but have totally different taste & style.

I don’t know if “SOTO BETAWI” is their brand or it’s the thing that they serve here. Because I never try any soto betawi except this place. Olrait, about the soup that they serve here is so fresh to me, delight sensation, you know right there are some food that leave so much taste in your neck but it’s not. They serve meat and many other parts of cow’s lung and heart are my favorite. I always miss this food.

This is a simple restaurant that provides Soto Betawi in clear soup. The Soto Betawi here is different with the one in Jakarta that is served with coconut milk soup. For the beef, we could choose the mixed part or several parts of the beef that we like. I tried Soto Betawi (IDR 30,000) with white rice sprinkled with fried onions (IDR 5,000). Mixed part of beef that consists of meat, tongue, brain, tripe, lung, heart in a clear soup with green onions, fried onions, and eggs. Served it with sweet soy sauce and chili for the best taste.
